The history of LEGO starts as early as 1932 and begins in Denmark. Ole Kirk Christiansen a carpenter from Billund starts producing and selling wooden toys. The name “LEGO” originates from the danish phrase for “play well”. In 1949 LEGO starts producing its famous plastic bricks. But it was not until the early 1960ies, that the company became economically successful. The LEGO items from this early years are still compatible with todays parts and have influenced many generations of kids in their play and development of creativity.
One of the “secrets of the LEGO systems is the tolerance of the single brick. It must allow the deconstruction of every toy build while being stable enough not to fall apart on its own. The moulds used in the LEGO production guarantee a tolerance of only 0,0002 millimeters. Only 18 of every million bricks produced do not meet these quality standards.
The LEGO System was developed in stages.
In the first era constructing and building houses was the focus. In a second era, from 1962 movement and wheels were added to the LEGO System.
So in a way the development of LEGO reflects a development in our history: from basic needs to virtual worlds. Critiques have said that just replaying movies does not nurture our children’s creativity enough.They should create their own plays in their own world from their own creativity instead of just replaying fantasy movies.
